Exhibition designer Susan Freeman of FRD, Sydney invited me to create a three screen video work for the entry space to the exhibition ‘Tang – treasures from the Silk Road capital’ staged at the Art Gallery of New South Wales 09 April – 10 July 2016.
Two screens presented sequenced photographs taken in the modern city of Xi’an by AGNSW photographer Jenni Carter during curatorial visits to the city just prior to the exhibition. A third 100″ vertical screen presented a layered triptych of video sequences derived from a shoot I directed remotely in Xi’an a few years earlier.
The three screens provided a sense of animation and insight into the contemporary city of Xi’an, before visitors entered the exhibition to view the showcased 1,000 year old objects.
